Provençal Wardrobe, Known As The Nîmes Wardrobe, With A Gendarme's Hat – 19th Century
A beautiful Provençal walnut wardrobe, known as a Nîmes wardrobe, dating from the Louis XV period, characterized by its elegant gendarme's hat-shaped top and its richly carved decoration of shells and floral motifs, typical of Gard production in the 18th century. The front features doors with shaped panels adorned with a finely executed bouquet in relief. The shell decoration, in the regional Louis XV style, is also found in the moldings. The lower rail is cut, openwork, and carved. It offers beautiful proportions with a height of 254 cm, a width of 140 cm, and a depth of 60 cm. The interior, made of softwood, is fitted with a shelf surmounted by a shaped gallery to hold bonnets. It retains its original locks with a metal keyhole and key. The cabriole legs are decorated with acanthus leaves. The walnut has a beautiful, warm, and deep antique patina with rich nuances.
