Large Périgord-style Chest, Southwest France, In Solid Walnut, Late 17th - Early 18th Century
An important Périgord wedding chest dating from the late 17th or very early 18th century, crafted from solid walnut. It rests on two straight rear feet, while the two front feet are composed of two flattened discs. A wide plinth with a convex molding, typical of this region, surrounds the base of the chest. A molded strip, inlaid in a groove at the top, also encircles the chest. A thick, molded top, with a continuous edge, opens with two beautiful hand-forged iron hinges. Inside, there is a transverse compartment with a lid in the upper left section. This lovely piece, typical of our countryside, has survived in remarkable condition considering its age and its use over time and through changing lifestyles. However, some minor repairs are worth noting: The two rear feet have been reinforced, the two front cushions have been replaced, and there are signs of wear on the surface of the plinth, although it remains perfectly sound in its thickness. The back is mainly composed of a large and remarkable oak plank where one can see all the marks of tools used at that time, notably the adze. There is no lock, but a wrought iron hasp allows the chest to be securely closed (see photo). Dimensions: Height 75 cm, Length 140 cm, Depth 71 cm. For shipping costs by carrier, please contact us.
