A striking and decorative true pair of antique Japanese karashishi (Buddhist lions), dating to the late 19th century.

Modelled in a lively and expressive manner, each lion stands in a dynamic arched posture with finely detailed scrolling mane, bushy tail, and powerful limbs. Their open jaws reveal sharp teeth and curling tongues, conveying the protective and spirited nature traditionally associated with these mythical guardians.

The figures are covered in a superb turquoise to deep blue glaze, with subtle variations and darker pooling in the recesses, enhancing the depth and movement of the modelling. This vibrant coloration, combined with the energetic sculptural quality, is characteristic of Meiji period ceramic production.

A true opposing pair, designed to face one another, they embody harmony and balance and would have originally served as protective figures within a domestic or temple setting.

An especially attractive and well-preserved pair, notable for their colour, scale, and expressive quality.

Height: 18 cm
Width: 19 cm each
