Bronze Statue Representing Joan Of Arc By The Artist G. Poitevin
Artist: Poitvin Gustave
Gilt bronze sculpture of Joan of Arc in a triumphant pose, sword raised to the sky, on a rocky mound. She wears a laurel wreath and is clad in meticulously detailed armor. The work is signed on the base G. POITVIN, and rests on a red marble base bearing the UNIS France foundry mark and model number 19-98-10.
The myth of Joan of Arc was very popular during the Art Deco period after her canonization in 1920. Cast between 1920 and 1930. The sword has been replaced, and there is a slight dent on the marble base.
Gustave Poitvin (1900-1999) belonged to the generation of Art Deco sculptors. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1921, marking his entry into the Parisian art scene. Mentions in the magazine Art & Décoration also indicate that he received awards for his works in the early 1920s; he distinguished himself with his elegant automobile mascots and decorative bronzes, sometimes distributed by Hermès.
