A Tokyo School Bronze Okimono Depicting Guan Yu
A Japanese bronze okimono depicting Guan Yu, the famous Chinese general, shown standing with a composed expression, long flowing beard, and an ornate headdress.
In his right hand he holds his characteristic curved-blade halberd, finely modelled and enriched with elegant decorative elements and a ring pendant; in his left he carries a small pouch of fine silk, a gift from the Emperor, intended to protect and keep it clean. His robe, broad and solemn, is rendered with careful attention to the rhythm of the folds and enriched with engraved motifs along the borders and on the back, where a refined geometric decoration appears.
Period: Meiji, late 19th century
Dimensions: 38 × 16 × 9.5 cm
