Original Black-and-white Osteological Lithograph From Volume 1 Of Bourgery & Jacob

A beautiful original black-and-white osteological lithograph, taken from the first volume of Bourgery and Jacob’s work. It depicts two skulls: that of an adult and that of a full-term fetus, placed side by side to compare the shape of the superior cranial vault. This plate highlights the morphological differences between these two stages of human development.
It comes from the famous “Complete Treatise on Human Anatomy,” a major medical work authored by Dr. Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797–1849) and magnificently illustrated by the painter Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782–1871). Published in Paris between 1831 and 1854, this atlas is still considered today one of the most remarkable anatomy treatises of the 19th century.
The plate before you belongs to Volume I, dedicated to osteology, and is numbered Pl. 15. It is an original lithograph printed in Paris by Benard from a drawing from life by N.H. Jacob.
At the time, these anatomical plates were used for medical education. Today, they are sought after as much for their scientific and historical value as for their beauty. They would fit perfectly in a cabinet of curiosities.

Condition: good condition. Edges of the sheet damaged in places without affecting the integrity of the lithograph
