Modernist Coffee Table In Solid Elm, Cylindrical Pine Base, 1970s
Maison Lecan presents this solid elm coffee table from the 1970s, a piece with a direct and assertive character in the style of Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Chapo—that French rural modernism which made raw materials and simple form its sole arguments. The rectangular top with its generously rounded corners is one of the piece's most successful details. This treatment of the corners, far from being insignificant, softens the silhouette while reinforcing the impression of mass and solidity—a tension between the power of the volume and the gentle curve that is characteristic of the best design of this period. The solid elm, with its dark, tight grain and chocolate and tobacco hues, reveals a dense and warm material of beautiful depth. The surface, crafted in the Maison Lecan workshops, enhances the wood without altering its essence. The four sturdy and well-proportioned cylindrical legs in solid pine firmly anchor the table to the floor. The interplay between the density of the elm and the lighter texture of the pine creates a subtle variation in texture that discreetly enriches the overall design without complicating it. At 200 cm long, with a low height of 40 cm and a weight of approximately 50 kg, this table makes a natural statement in a spacious living room, a loft, or any interior that appreciates objects with weight—both literally and figuratively.
