Glazed Ceramic Coffee Table, Robert & Jean Cloutier Zg2, 1970s
Maison Lecan presents this coffee table by Robert (1930-2008) and Jean (1930-2015) Cloutier, French ceramicists whose work under the ZG2 label is now actively sought after by collectors of 1970s design. The tabletop is composed of glazed ceramic tiles forming an immediately recognizable graphic composition: a glossy black background, tightly packed vertical white lines, and raised red and orange ellipses arranged rhythmically across the entire surface. The interplay between the geometric rigor of the grid and the organic character of the raised forms is typical of the Cloutiers' style. The ceramic is in good overall condition, with some slight superficial signs of wear normal for a piece of this age. The black lacquered metal frame, understated and well-proportioned, with its horizontal crossbars and patinated brass fixing details, frames the tabletop without overpowering it.
