Umberto Stiaccini, “la Perla”, Alabaster Lamp, 20th Century
Artist: Umberto Stiaccini
An alabaster lamp depicting a woman reclining in an open seashell supported by a wave, and three putti standing on rocks strewn with shells. The whole rests on a circular base adorned with a metal plaque bearing the name “La Perla”. This is an evocation of Greek mythology, according to which Cronus, imprisoned within the Earth by his father Uranus, cut off the latter's genitals and threw them into the sea. From this sea foam, Aphrodite was born, carried to the shores of Cyprus on a seashell.
Signed “U. Stiaccini” on the back.
Umberto Stiaccini was an Italian sculptor who was primarily active in Florence between 1900 and 1930. Working mainly with alabaster and marble, he created decorative pieces and lighting fixtures blending classical inspiration with Art Deco modernity.
There is a slight scratch on the seashell.
The electrical system needs servicing.
As is.
