Pierre Brebiette Attributed To "the Rest During The Flight Into Egypt"
Artist: Pierre Brebiette Attribué à
Attributed to Pierre Brebiette. Oil on copper panel, "The Rest on the Flight into Egypt," unsigned. 36.5 x 30 cm. French School. Not yet twenty years old, Pierre Brebiette (1598-1650) embarked on a journey to Italy, determined to enrich himself with all the marvelous beauties the peninsula produced. He remained there for eight years. The Bénézit dictionary of painters and sculptors describes him thus: "Of a very fertile and rather lazy genius, he preferred drawing to painting all his life." When they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you." Gospel according to Matthew. Our painting contains treasures of sensitivity and tenderness that only a painter of such prolific talent as Brebiette could have conceived. Here, we find all that the young painter gleaned that was most enriching during his stay in Italy. Here, there is no question of a workshop, nor of a follower, but rather of a sincere work where, for a time, the happiness to which good people aspire is displayed before the world. Brebiette's paintings are very rare on the art market. Carved and gilded wooden frame from the Louis XVI period. Minor old restorations. Good Condition: 3800 euros.
