Not yet twenty years old, Pierre Brebiette (1598-1650) embarked on a journey to Italy, determined to enrich himself with all the marvelous beauties the peninsula produced. He remained there for eight years. The Bénézit dictionary of painters and sculptors describes him thus: "Of a very fertile and rather lazy genius, he preferred drawing to painting all his life." Here, we find all that the young painter gleaned that was most enriching during his stay in Italy. Here, there is no question of a workshop, nor of a follower, but rather of a sincere work where, for a time, the happiness to which good people aspire is displayed before the world.
