Clock Bronze Manufacturer: Denière Watchmaker: Japy Frèresan Exceptional Clock In Turquin Marbl

An exceptional clock in Turquin marble and finely chased and gilded bronze, resting on a highly elegant architectural design inspired by the Neoclassical decorative vocabulary of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The composition is organized around a central cylindrical shaft of Turquin marble, a deep gray veined with lighter shades, which serves as a setting for the movement and, by contrast, highlights the brilliance of the gilding.

The case is framed by a rich decoration of gilded bronzes of remarkable chasing quality, characteristic of the finest Parisian manufacture. On either side of the cylinder, two scrolled lateral brackets, inspired by the shape of Ionic volutes, support the structure and are adorned with acanthus leaves, knotted ribbons, and cascading foliage. These elements are executed with extreme fineness, revealing the technical mastery of Parisian bronze workers.

The cylinder is encircled by a laurel wreath in gilt bronze, knotted and cascading naturally, a classic symbol of victory and honor. This wreath visually connects the side supports and frames the dial, reinforcing the overall balance of the composition. The base, with its undulating surface, also combines Turquin marble and gilt bronze, enriched with foliate friezes, clasps, and finely sculpted plant motifs. The whole rests on four small turned feet in gilt bronze, giving the clock a stable and elegant base.

At the top, a spectacular sculptural crown unfolds in gilt bronze: an interlacing of laurel branches forming a wreath, traversed by stylized decorative attributes evoking honorific and military symbols, rendered with great lightness of modeling and a remarkable sense of movement.

The high quality of the dial, protected by a domed glass, is also noteworthy, a true work of art in its own right. Crafted in domed white enamel, this timepiece is distinguished by its exceptionally refined composition and rich decoration. The elegantly calligraphed Arabic numerals are set within a delicate network of bluish scrolls and garlands punctuated with small gilt flowers, creating an ethereal and exquisitely delicate design. The center is enlivened by a pair of finely openworked and chiseled gilt-bronze hands, whose sophisticated design evokes fine goldsmithing. Around the dial, the gilt-bronze bezel features a subtle relief that emphasizes the depth of the domed dial. The entire piece is further distinguished by delicately applied gilt motifs in low relief on the enamel, lending the dial a precious and luminous quality. This meticulous craftsmanship testifies to the high level of aesthetic excellence of Denière's creations, where every detail is treated with elegance and precision to offer a timekeeping experience within a decorative setting of rare distinction.

The signature “Denière” or “Denière Fabt de Bronzes à Paris” corresponds to Jean-François Denière (1774-1866), one of the most important Parisian bronze casters of the 19th century. His workshop was renowned for the exceptional quality of its bronzes, both for the fineness of the chasing and the richness and depth of the gilding, which places this clock among the very highest quality productions of Parisian horology and bronze art.

The movement is visible on the back and also bears the stamp of the famous Japy Frères watchmaking company, a great family of French watchmakers whose mechanisms equipped the finest clocks of the 19th century. The movement is numbered 1769, a number also found on the pendulum, attesting to the homogeneity and authenticity of the entire piece.

With its rich decoration, exceptional quality of chasing and gilding, and the combined presence of the Denière signature and the Japy Frère movement, this clock is a remarkable example of 19th-century Parisian gilt bronze and marble production, combining technical perfection, decorative refinement, and a strong architectural presence.

Original mechanism intact, without modification. Strikes the hours and half-hours on an antique bell with a clear and authentic sound.
