Reliquary – Reliquary Of The True Cross – Solid Silver – France
Mid-19th century – France. Portable reliquary of the True Cross, dating from the 19th century, in excellent condition. This object of private devotion, intended to be worn or kept, contains a fragment of wood presented as being from the True Cross. The reliquary, made of solid silver, features a composition protected under glass on its front: a fragment of wood arranged in the shape of a cross, against a purple fabric background. A handwritten cartouche reads: "V. Croix de NS" (Virgin Cross of Our Lord). The back of the reliquary is removable, allowing access to the internal seal. This seal is intact, with its original threads and red wax seal, attesting to an unaltered ecclesiastical mounting. This complete state of preservation is particularly desirable for this type of object. The mount features openwork decoration inspired by the Neo-Gothic style. The reverse is decorated with a finely engraved scene depicting Christ on the cross, radiant, accompanied by a kneeling figure in a composition evoking Golgotha. Dimensions: – Height with bail: approximately 2.5 cm. Condition: Very good overall condition. Minor wear consistent with age and slight patina on the silver.
