The author, Claude Bourgelat (1712-1779), also published Elements of Veterinary Art. He was director and inspector general of veterinary schools, commissioner general of the royal stud farms, and a corresponding member of numerous academies. His first work, The New Newcastle, was a success in the equestrian world of Europe. He wrote the articles on horses for the Diderot & D'Alembert Encyclopedia, as well as those on medicine and veterinary art. In 1766, he founded the veterinary school located at the Château d'Alfort.
