Marquetry Cabinet Signed Befort Jeune – Paris, 19th Century
An elegant Parisian cabinet signed Befort Jeune (Mathieu Béfort, 1813–1880), one of the distinguished cabinetmakers active in Paris during the second half of the 19th century. The piece is veneered in mahogany with contrasting satinwood panels, creating a refined interplay between warm reddish tones and lighter decorative fields. The architecturally structured front is enriched with chased and gilt bronze mounts, including laurel wreaths, floral motifs, and delicate ornamental borders typical of the Louis XVI style, which was highly prized during the Napoleon III period. The central panel is decorated with a painted pastoral scene, framed by an elegant gilt border that forms the focal point of the composition. The sides are adorned with vertical gilt-bronze mounts and decorative fluting, accentuating the classical symmetry and harmonious proportions of the piece. The cabinet is topped with a breccia marble slab, whose warm tones harmonize perfectly with the rich mahogany veneer and the brilliance of the gilt bronzes. The whole piece testifies to the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of the finest Parisian workshops of the mid-19th century. Furniture bearing the stamp "BEFORT JEUNE" is particularly prized for the quality of its execution and its elegant reinterpretation of earlier French styles, making it highly sought after by collectors of decorative arts from the Napoleon III period.
