Yoruba Horseman, Benin Or Nigeria 01
Statue depicting a figure riding a horse. He holds a rifle in one hand and a finely crafted spear in the other. His posture is upright and proud. His attributes suggest an ancestral figure of a high-ranking dignitary or king. The headdress falls in an arc to the rider's buttocks, lending dynamism to the sculpture. Horses were rare and reserved for the nobility or the sovereign. The horse is equipped with stirrups, a saddle, and richly ornamented harness. This type of statue was intended to be placed on an altar.
