Covered Porcelain Ginger Jar Decorated With Figures And Calligraphy – China, Late 19th Century
Artist: Inconnu
A covered porcelain ginger jar with figures and calligraphy – China, late 19th – early 20th century. An elegant covered porcelain ginger jar, beautifully ovoid in shape, presented on its carved wooden base. The piece is entirely hand-decorated with a scene depicting court ladies accompanied by servants in a garden, rendered in a style inspired by traditional Chinese painting. The figures, dressed in long, elegantly draped robes, move within a setting punctuated by stylized flowers and wispy clouds, lending the whole a poetic and refined atmosphere. The palette, composed of celadon greens, powdery pinks, and black lines, highlights the finesse of the drawing and the delicacy of the painting. The reverse of the piece is adorned with several columns of hand-painted calligraphy, consisting of traditional poetic maxims evoking the harmony, beauty, and purity of nature, themes dear to Chinese literati aesthetics. The lid, also made of porcelain, is topped with a bud-shaped handle, characteristic of this type of jar commonly known as a ginger jar. Originally intended for storing ginger and other precious foodstuffs, these jars became highly sought-after decorative objects from the 19th century onwards, prized for their elegance and exotic appeal in Western interiors. A charming decorative piece, ideal for a console table, bookcase, or display case dedicated to the arts of the Far East. Period: China, late 19th – early 20th century. Condition: Good overall condition. Note a small chip visible on the lid handle. Presented on its carved wooden base.
