Empire Clock, 1805, Fountain Toilet
An Empire period clock circa 1805 in finely chased and mercury-gilded bronze, exquisitely illustrating the Neoclassical aesthetic of the early 19th century. The decoration is fully in keeping with the ornamental vocabulary of the Imperial period, directly inspired by antiquity. The scene depicts a young boy at his toilette, seated before a fountain inspired by antique models. His supple posture, slightly inclined head, and delicate gesture lend a tender and contemplative dimension to his presence before a mirror that amplifies this scene. The clock is decorated with butterflies, symbols of the Empire period, and applied winged female heads, mythological figures whose outstretched wings and hairstyles evoke the guardian spirits of nature. The original wire-driven movement has been serviced by a watchmaker and includes a pendulum and key. The enamel dial is in perfect condition, with original, atypical hands. The remarkably well-preserved mercury gilding highlights the richness of the chasing and still offers beautiful nuances between matte and glossy surfaces. Brilliant. This clock is a rare and uncommon model due to its original design and scene inspired by antiquity. Height 42 / Base 24 x 12. UPS DELIVERY
