Edgar Brandt (1880-1960) Attributable To, Wrought Iron Cigar Holder In The Shape Of A Crane, Art Deco, Ca. 1925

Artist: Attribué à Edgar Brandt
Attributed to Edgar Brandt (Paris 1880 – Collonge-Bellerive 1960) France, circa 1925.

Hammered wrought iron cigar ashtray, representing a stylized crane with long legs resting on a Siena yellow marble base, marked France.

A major figure in French wrought ironwork of the Art Deco movement, Edgar Brandt established himself from the 1920s onwards as one of the most influential creators in metalwork. He created numerous works for private residences, hotels, and public commissions, while also producing a significant body of decorative objects such as lamps, railings, consoles, and furniture. He regularly participated in Parisian Salons and enjoyed international recognition, notably at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, for which he created, among other things, the monumental Porte d'Honneur (Gate of Honor). His work is distinguished by its great technical mastery and the combination of different materials, primarily wrought iron and bronze, but also gilded copper, steel, aluminum, and Studal alloy. Among his students and collaborators was Raymond Subes, who continued the tradition of French wrought ironwork in the 20th century.
