Germany: Solid Silver Cigarette Case Or Box With Enamel Decoration. Early 20th Century, Art Dec
Silver and enamel cigarette case, early 20th century German Art Deco work
The box, in solid silver, is rectangular in shape with chamfered edges. The lid is decorated with a double net of blue enamel interrupted by "crossings" of white enamel.
Mounted on a spring hinge, the box opens with a push button on the side.
The interior is engraved with a dedication in German “Zur frdl. Erinnerung // an die Direction // Stosh-Sarrasani // Weihn 1918" meaning "In friendly remembrance of the Stosh-Sarrasani management Christmas 1918".
It is most likely a gift offered to a member of the Stosh-Sarrasani circus, very well known in Germany, and particularly in Dresden at the beginning of the 20th century.
The case is hallmarked:
. A crescent moon and a crown, German hallmark for sterling silver
. 900 for silver title
There is no maker's mark to identify a goldsmith, but the period, style and provenance are clues that may indicate manufacture in Pforzheim, a city famous for its production of precious goldsmith objects.
The box is very elegant in its simplicity enhanced by these two-tone enamels.
8.5 x 7.1cm
1cm thick
93,20 gr
Good condition. Minor bumps and scratches from use. The enamel shows no accidents.
