Gendarme's Bicorn Hat, Model 1872, France, Gendarmerie, Third Republic
A beautiful and quite rare gendarme's bicorn hat, Model 1872, made of felt trimmed with silver braid.
This tall-brimmed model, inherited from the Second Empire, was replaced in 1895 by a smaller bicorn.
It is adorned at the front with a tricolor cockade, a black-edged braid, and a silver button with a grenade inscribed "Gendarmerie - Ordre Public" (Gendarmerie - Public Order).
The interior is lined with canvas and a sweatband.
Overall, it is in good condition. There are signs of wear consistent with age, the sweatband has been replaced, and there is a small, barely visible tear (see photo).
The total height at the back is approximately 24 cm.
