Small Post-impressionist Market Scene. René De Baugnies. Belgian School.

A beautiful small oil painting on cardboard, circa 1930, depicting a lively market scene. It is the work of a well-known artist of the Belgian school. René de Baugnies was born in Leuven in 1869 and died in Brussels in 1962. He was a painter of landscapes and seascapes. Post-Impressionist. He exhibited in Paris at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts between 1910 and 1939. He primarily painted landscapes of Belgian and Dutch Flanders and views of North Sea ports. He is listed in the Bénézit (dictionary of painters, sculptors, draftsmen, and engravers) and also in an illustrated biographical dictionary of artists in Belgium since 1830, Arto, Brussels, 1987. His works can be seen in the museums of Ixelles and Tournai. His brushwork is light, lively, and delicate. There are a few annotations on the back of the work. Dimensions without the frame: 24 cm x 18 cm. With a lovely antique frame, likely original, in gilt stucco: 28 cm x 22 cm.
