Son of the renowned Carl August Liner, whose disciple he quickly became, Carl Walter Liner's youth was marked by numerous travels to Egypt, France, Algeria, Spain, Italy, and Corsica. He divided his time between his studios in Paris, Fontvieille (Provence), and Appenzell (Switzerland).
His encounters and friendships with Vlaminck, Braque, and especially Zadkine, Schneider, and Erich Heckel influenced his work: large abstract canvases, yet imbued with figurative elements and brimming with movement.
Carl Walter Liner's works were primarily exhibited in Switzerland, Germany, France, and the United States.
