Gabriel Dieudonné Victor Augizeau is a painter renowned for his landscapes of the Vendée and the Pays des Olonnes. The Augizeau family settled in Les Sables-d'Olonne around 1905-1910, taking over a café on Rue Printanière, which also sold charcuterie. Gabriel Augizeau, who showed an early aptitude for drawing, eventually gave up the business to devote himself entirely to painting, transforming the premises into his studio.
For most of the year, he worked in his studio. But in the summer, he would set up in his "cabin," which opened onto the seafront. The port, the sailboats, and the ferryman across the channel were the painter's main subjects. The coastline, too, including the wild shores of Château-d'Olonne with the famous Pain de Sucre rocks and Île Saint-Jean, were among his favorites.
