Carlo Naya, Doge's Palace And Lion Column, Venice, Italy C. 1880 Albumen Print
Artist: Carlo Naya (1816-1882)
Vintage albumen print of the Doge's Palace and the Lion Column, Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy. In front of the Doge's Palace on the Piazzetta, the column supports the winged lion of Saint Mark, made of bronze. In fact, it is more likely an oriental chimera, a war tribute, to which wings were later added. The lion has become emblematic of Venice. Carlo Naya (1816-1882) was one of the pioneers of photography in Italy. After studying law in Pisa, he settled in Venice in Piazza San Marco to open one of the largest photography establishments of his time. Size 26 x 35.5 cm. Mat 40 x 50 cm.
