Carlo Ponti (1823-1893) The Lamp Of Galileo, Pisa C.1865 Albumen Print Vintage Photograph
Artist: Carlo Ponti (1823-1893)
Vintage albumen print circa 1870. Galileo's Lamp. The photograph captures the intricate details of the bronze chandelier, including the putti figures and the delicate suspended scales representing the constellations. The "Galileo's Lamp" in Pisa is a large bronze chandelier located inside the cathedral of Pisa, Italy. According to tradition, the young Galileo Galilei observed the oscillations of this lamp during long religious ceremonies, which inspired him to formulate his theory of the isochronism of pendulums (the oscillations of a pendulum always have the same duration, regardless of their amplitude). Carlo Ponti (1823-1893), a Swiss optician and photographer, settled in Venice around 1848. There he opened an optical shop renowned for its high-quality instruments. Collaborating with other photographers, he became the official photographer of King Victor Emmanuel II in 1866. Format 19 x 25 cm, mat 40 x 50 cm.
