Covered Sugar Bowl In Solid Silver-gilt - Restoration/empire Period
Superb complete sugar bowl (body + lid + base) in solid silver (950/1000) with vermeil decoration, in the Empire style.
A typical piece from the Restoration/early Louis-Philippe period (1819-1838), with a persistent Empire style.
The domed body rests on a gadrooned foot, with sculptural zoomorphic handles (lions holding bunches of grapes). The domed lid features a gadrooned frieze and a chiseled pinecone finial. The lid displays an elegant engraved decoration of bunches of grapes and vine leaves. The central motif depicts two swans drinking.
Hallmarks (detailed by part):
Base: Large guarantee hallmark Paris "Ceres", Vieillard 1st standard hallmark (950/1000), illegible maker's mark (possibly DG or similar, partially effaced).
Lid: Large guarantee hallmark Paris "Ceres", Vieillard hallmark 1st standard (950/1000), illegible maker's mark.
Sugar bowl body: Medium guarantee hallmark Paris "Mask of Tragedy", Vieillard hallmark 1st standard (950/1000), illegible maker's mark.

Total weight: 600 g (of which base: 148 g, and sugar bowl + lid: 452 g)
Condition:
Very good for its age (over 180 years) – intact structure, no major damage or deformation, engravings and reliefs are crisp. Wear to the gilt is visible on the base and lid (handling areas: rubbing, partial tarnishing of the gilding), but no wear to the gilt on the body of the sugar bowl (gilding well preserved). A few minor scratches from normal use.
