A. Aucoc – Solid Silver Jardinière, Napoleon III Period

A rectangular solid silver jardinière resting on four corner feet. The corner supports, shaped like stylized quivers decorated with lanceolate leaves, rest on tapered bases and terminate in small foliate candle holders. A beaded frieze runs beneath the upper band, emphasizing the geometric rigor of the piece.
The four sides feature remarkable openwork decoration of scrolling foliage, a symmetrical interweaving of leaves and volutes forming an undulating trellis. The finely executed plant-inspired motifs, alternating solid and void, create a particularly refined interplay of light and shadow.
The base is highlighted by a raised frieze decorated with water leaves or stylized interlacing patterns. The jardinière retains its original zinc liner, painted green, designed to protect the silver from moisture. This original element enhances its authenticity and functionality.
The piece demonstrates excellent craftsmanship in chasing and assembly, characteristic of the great Parisian houses. The decorative motifs – fluted pilasters, a beaded frieze, and symmetrical scrolls – clearly evoke the revisited Louis XVI style, highly prized during the Second Empire.
