France, 17th Century, Sculpture Of The Virgin Of The Annunciation (h 61 Cm)

This sculpture of the Virgin of the Annunciation is a 17th-century French work.
This theme depicts the moment when the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will be the mother of Christ.
Standing, she rests her right hand on the book placed on a lectern. In accordance with a widespread iconography in Western Europe, according to which the Annunciation took place in Mary's chamber, she is shown thus engaged in studying the prophetic texts.
In a moment of prayerful contemplation, she raises her left hand in a gesture of acceptance, of her consent to God.
She is dressed in a long cloak open over a long, belted gown with numerous pleats. Her long, wavy hair falls on either side of her shoulders, revealing a broad, domed forehead.
Her delicate and serene face exudes a great gentleness combined with the strength conveyed by the gestures of her hands.

Traces of original polychromy and later polychromy are present.
In very good condition considering its age. Split in the wood on the right side of the lectern.
Hanging loop on the back.
