King David, Pine Wood Sculpture, Central Europe, Late 16th Century – Early 17th Century
King David, pine wood sculpture, Central Europe, late 16th – early 17th century. This pine wood figure, which would have belonged to a larger decorative program, was made to be viewed from the front, as the back is uncarved. The figure's contrapposto pose, in a movement suggesting a step forward, and the head turned to one side, are characteristic of the artistic period to which it belongs. It has some losses. Conservation and consolidation work has been carried out.
