John Sydney Steel (perth 1863 – Balquhidder 1932) Scene With Figures.
John Sydney Steel
(Perth 1863 – Balquhidder 1932)
Scene with figures in Algeria or Morocco, oil on canvas, 30.5 × 46 cm. Signed.
Steel was born in Australia but trained in London at the prestigious Slade School of Art, following the advice of Sir John Everett Millais, who was a friend of his father. After completing his studies, he settled in the United Kingdom, although due to his health he frequently travelled to North Africa in search of a warmer climate. The present oil painting was executed during one of these stays, probably in Algeria or Morocco. It was precisely this type of work, together with his hunting scenes, that brought him the greatest fame during his lifetime.
He enjoyed considerable success during his life and exhibited in most of the major art institutions of the period, including the Royal Academy, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the Glasgow Institute, and the Grosvenor Gallery, among others. Towards the end of his life, encouraged by his admirers and fellow painters, he held a large solo exhibition in London, which brought him great success and recognition.
Works by the artist are held in the museums of Perth and in the National Gallery of South Africa.
