Fireplace Rack, Castle Kitchen Rack, Wrought Iron, 17th Century
Rare wrought iron fireplace rack, dating from the late 17th century. Our rack, known as a "chain" and "hook" rack, is typical of those found south of the Loire River (the more common toothed racks being those found north of the Loire). It comes from a castle located in the Périgord Noir region. These racks were often found in the castles of Cathar country. They were always attached to a bar that was itself sealed into the fireplace. The hooks could be used to hang cured meats to dry, but they could also be used to raise cauldrons and pots, thus keeping them away from the fire. A magnificent piece of ironwork. It is in very good condition and, unusually, perfectly complete. A magnificent object, rare in its proportions (2.65 meters high) and its condition. Repurposed, this rack could be used to suspend a large chandelier in a castle with high ceilings. Shipping within mainland France: €35; for other destinations, please contact us.
