Large Baroque Wood Paneling, Gilded And Polychrome Wood Pediment, Overdoor, Early 19th Century
An exceptional piece of Baroque-style carved and polychrome wood paneling, decorated with a cherub's face and a chase scene between guards and a brigand/poacher. Made in the very early 19th century. The carved border features drapery adorned with a ribbon of coins, all undulating and surmounted by a gilded acanthus leaf. The central cartouche depicts two guards on horseback pursuing a brigand or poacher concealed in the vegetation. The latter fires an arrow into the chest of one of the guards. The sculpted details of this scene are truly exceptional. The lower part of our wood paneling is adorned with a cherub's face surrounded by wings. The entire piece is beautifully polychromed, the colors having retained all their depth (with some minor retouching). This paneling can be displayed alone on a wall as a decorative object, but it can also be used as a door overdoor, bed canopy, pediment, etc. Magnificent work, origin Switzerland/Germany/Austria, early 19th century. (Provenance of a theater??) Hanging system on the back.
