Beautiful Corsair's Snuffbox, Lacquered Tin, Circa 1780
Dimensions: 12.5cm x 8cm x 2cm.
Beautiful, watertight, pocket-sized tin for pipe tobacco, lacquered black, lid decorated with tortoise shell varnish, depicting the Anglo-Norman lion gripping an anchor, emblem of English privateers during Anglo-Spanish War, second half of the 18th century.
An ink handwritten text on a gold background beneath lion, partially erased, appears to be a long maxim and can be deciphered by someone more learned than myself.
I obtained this information from a German connoisseur.
Tin is in good condition, although interior has likely been relacquered.
The superb lid shows some wear and a few small rust spots, nothing serious.
