Jean Etcheverrygaray (1877-1952) Painter. Self-taught. Born in Saint-Jean-de-Luz on October 8, 1877. Son of Auger Etcheverrygaray, tinsmith (from Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle) and Catalina Francisca de Ochoeguia, from Ornieta (Gipuzkoa). Second-born twin (his twin brother: Joseph, first-born). Married in 1945 to Catherine Bourthayre. Died in Saint-Jean-de-Luz on February 8, 1952. Key facts: House painter, musician, curious mind, he learned to paint with Floutier. Very dynamic, in 1904 he founded the Estudiantina "L'Oursin" or "qui s'y frotte s'y pique" (roughly translated as "He who rubs against it gets pricked"). He was also instrumental in the creation of the Saint-Jean-de-Luz Municipal Band in 1908. He composed numerous fandangos. 1993: Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
