Boulle Marquetry Writing Box, Napoleon III
Napoleon III period, circa 1850–1880. A Boulle marquetry writing box, crafted in a contrasting style (brass base and red-tinted tortoiseshell decoration), characteristic of Parisian production during the Second Empire. The decoration features a network of finely cut and engraved foliate scrolls against a polished brass background. The whole is framed by brass moldings, highlighting the quality of the workmanship. The lid, fitted with a turned brass handle, opens to reveal a blackened wood interior comprising: a compartment beneath a lid with a knob, two inkwell slots, and a concave writing tool compartment. A small side drawer is located on the exterior of the box. Two folding side panels allow the box to be opened. This model illustrates the 19th-century taste for reinterpreting the Louis XIV style, in the tradition of André-Charles Boulle's creations. Good overall condition. Marquetry in good condition. Wear and minor signs of use consistent with age.
