"Large Gilded Wooden Barometer-thermometer From The Early 19th Century"
Impressive barometer thermometer in carved and gilded wood, large (150 cm high). The richly decorated frame features a pearl frieze, leaf scrolls, a central acanthus leaf and an elegant ribbon bow at the top, typical of the neoclassical taste of the early 19th century. The lower part is decorated with a carved cartouche and a shell. The instrument combines: a mercury barometer, with graduated scale and inscriptions in French ("Baromètre selon Torricelli"), a thermometer, with glass tube and graduation in Réaumur degrees. French work, circa 1810-1820, Empire – Restoration period. A large, rare model, intended to adorn the living rooms or libraries of aristocratic or bourgeois homes. Old gilding with patina, wear from use, dial legible despite the marks of time. Instruments not verified for scientific use.
