Auguste Allongé (Paris 1833-Bourron-Marlotte 1898)
Landscape with a Lively Hamlet:
Drawing Watercolor
50 x 32.5 cm (sight size) 71 x 53 cm (framed)

Good condition - some stains - modern frame/mold
Auguste Allongé attended the École Impériale des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1852. He was a student of Léon Cogniet and Ducornet. He received a medal in 1853. A landscape painter, he also taught drawing. In 1873, he published a treatise on charcoal drawing techniques, which was translated into several languages. Observing that charcoal was mostly used only for sketches, he attempted to give this art the polish and ambition of finished works. He is sensitive to the effects of light, he replaces color with a very fine study of values. Close to the Barbizon School, he is part of Marlotte's second group.
