Articulated Artist's Mannequin In Carved Linden Wood – 19th Century
Articulated Artist's Mannequin in Carved Linden Wood – 19th Century. Formerly owned by the painter Léon Brunard (1872-1931). A rare and authentic articulated artist's mannequin in carved linden wood, dating from the 19th century, which belonged to the painter and ceramicist Léon Brunard (1872-1931). Standing 49 cm tall, this model displays fine carving, with precise rendering of anatomical volumes and harmonious proportions. The finely sculpted face retains a gentle and focused expression, characteristic of studio mannequins used for studying poses and compositions. The body is fully articulated: shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, allowing for a wide range of poses. The joinery is old and consistent with 19th-century craftsmanship. The wood, most likely linden – traditionally used for this type of object due to its fine grain and lightness – has a beautiful warm brown patina. The wear, rubbing, and small, old marks attest to genuine use in the studio. Documented Provenance: Recently rediscovered vintage photographs show Léon Brunard in his studio, surrounded by his works, with this same mannequin placed on a shelf. It is identifiable by its silhouette, proportions, and characteristic posture. This is therefore his personal studio mannequin, used in his artistic practice. This provenance gives the piece a particularly interesting historical and heritage dimension. Beyond simply being a 19th-century object of study, this mannequin becomes a direct witness to the creative process of a renowned artist, integrated into his working environment and pictorial world. Studio mannequins are, by their very nature, tools of creation; when they are documented and linked to an identified artist, they acquire additional value connected to the very history of artistic practice. An iconic object from the studios of 19th-century painters and sculptors, this mannequin is now a decorative and historically significant collector's item, ideal for a collector's cabinet, library, or studio-style interior. Period: 19th century Material: Carved linden wood Height: 49 cm Condition: Good overall condition, with age-related wear consistent with its age and provenance
