Paris Republican Horse Guard Helmet, Model 1860/1872, Napoleon III, Third Republic Cavalry
Impressive trooper helmet, Model 1860/1872, of the Paris Republican Horse Guard.
It is rare as it was only worn for four years, from 1872 to 1876.
It bears witness to a turbulent period in French history. This is a Second Empire period helmet, model 1860, whose headband was officially changed in 1872 after the fall of Napoleon III and the birth of the Third Republic: the imperial eagle was then replaced by the coat of arms of the city of Paris with the motto "Fluctuat Nec Mergitur" (it is tossed by the waves but does not sink).
The helmet is made of steel with the soldier's service number "2660" stamped on the back.
The brass crest is adorned with gadroons, laurel leaves, and serpents. It is topped by a brass plume holder.
It is complete with its leather-mounted chin straps and features a beautiful black mane of approximately 60 cm long.
Original black leather liner.
This superb collector's item is in very good condition. Light surface oxidation. The liner shows signs of wear, and the crest has undergone minor restoration.
It is sold with a later rooster feather plume.
Total height of the helmet (excluding the mane): 40 cm.
