Mediterranean Port, 19th Century Watercolor.

Artist: J. F. Varre
This large watercolor, enhanced with gouache, appears to depict a Mediterranean port. It is enlivened by numerous boats, sailing around anchored vessels with their sails furled. On the right, a steamer and a felucca cross the harbor. On the opposite side, several rowers in a longboat are taking a person seated under a shelter at the stern. The hilly landscape surrounding the port and the buildings suggests the Bosphorus, but I cannot be certain. It is framed with a mat bearing the name JF Varre, for which we have found no information. There is a slight imperfection in the watercolor, one centimeter wide, along the right edge, and the upper left corner has a crease. 19th century. Molded and gilded wood frame. Frame dimensions: 46 cm x 65 cm. Image dimensions: 32 cm x 52 cm.
