"Carved Horse Chestnut, 19th Century."
These humorous and charming miniature works were once carved by convicts, this tradition goes back to the 18th century and takes its place among the straw marquetry works, carved coconuts and other corozo nuts made by convicts when they were detained. The less prestigious materials used do not make the virtuosity and aesthetic sense of their author less extraordinary in the realization of these objects. With a very beautiful patina, this caricatural portrait has two sulphide eyes, one of which has moved in its socket and is slightly slanted. The back of the subject has a small lack that has been filled with putty. 19th century period. Dimensions 5cm x 4.5cm.
