Vallauris Vase By Jean Gerbino In "mosaiced Earthenware" Mid-20th Century.
Artist: Gerbino
Technique and inventiveness at the service of Art...
This superb vase by Jean Gerbino is a distillation of the art of the master ceramist from Vallauris.
It is crafted using the "mosaic earth" technique, a combination of mosaic and neriage, or mixed clays.
The dominant tone is a monochrome of green enhanced with touches of reddish-brown, and the glaze has an exceptional brilliance.
It is rare in every respect.
Its dimensions are quite remarkable: 20 cm high by 20 cm in diameter, placing it well above the average size of the master's spherical vases.
It features two delicate reddish-brown handles that facilitate handling, distinguishing it from most of Gerbino's vases.
Above all, the blue-violet frieze halfway up the body, present on the vast majority of the artist's work, is decorated not with geometric shapes but with animals, which is extremely rare. In this instance, the dogs are reddish-brown, matching the ears and the upper rim of the vase, contributing to the overall pleasing unity.
The piece bears two clearly visible stamps under the base: the inscription VALLAURIS AM and the cursive signature Gerbino.
Jean Gerbino was born in Sicily in 1876 into a family of potters. He arrived in France in 1902 at the age of 26 and naturally found work as a potter at the Massier workshops in Vallauris.
After a short stay in Algeria, where he had established his own workshop, he returned to France and continued his training with Pichon, ceramists in Uzès.
He returned to Vallauris and the Massier family in 1919 and never left the village.
Naturalized French in 1928, he created his own company in 1930, which, from generation to generation, continued until 2003 after his death in 1966 at the age of 90.
Gerbino's work is the result of 15 years of work and research to arrive at the creation of "mosaic clay," which earned him the Grand Prix at the Concours Lépine in 1931.
Our vase is one of the finest examples of this and will bring originality, elegance, and distinction to your interior wherever you place it.
