The Little Pleasures Of Life Ii; One Must Drink The Wine When It Is Drawn
A charming little watercolor from the mid-19th century, depicting a good-natured peasant in clogs, leisurely strolling along, smoking a pipe, with a few bottles from one of his barrels. A bag on the ground, full of slightly overturned corks, the winemaker's colorful attire, his clogs and trousers that are too short, the cap on his head, the numbers on the barrel—the composition abounds in detail, suggesting an artist well-versed in rural life. Although unsigned, this is a true watercolorist who accurately captured this scene of everyday life. It is presented in its original frame (a very small chip in the upper right corner) and its period mat; the whole has never been opened. Dimensions of the watercolor (visible area): 20.5 cm x 15 cm
