Desk, Directoire Style Architect's Desk With A Two-plane Articulated Mechanism, 18th Century
Rare double-tiered articulated mahogany desk – Directoire period. A rare desk in solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneer, resting on four tapered legs with brass sabots, characteristic of the sober and structured aesthetic of the Directoire period. This model features an interesting double-tiered articulated mechanism: the upper surface lifts to form a slanted writing surface, revealing a second horizontal writing surface allowing for alternating use between reading and writing. It opens with a large drawer in the front and has two side pull-out slides covered in black leather tooled in gold, increasing the work surface. A compartment is fitted with its original brass inkwells. Very fine quality of workmanship, balanced proportions (94 cm), elegant and unusual size. A piece of furniture intended for study or administrative work, ideal as a centerpiece. Beautiful antique patina, leather preserved with consistent wear. French work, Directoire period (late 18th – early 19th century). Dimensions: Height: 78 cm Width: 94 cm Depth: 52 cm
