Object description :

"Jules Sarlandié Vase (1874-1936) - Truncated Conical Vase In Enameled Brass - Circa 1925 - Limoges"
Very good condition. Circa 1925. Signed J. SARLANDIE (with intertwined J&S) and located Limoges near the base. Height: 18 cm. From a set of two vases, sold separately. Provenance: - private collection, Alsace. This vase by Jules Sarlandie, made around 1925, brilliantly illustrates the decorative maturity of the Limoges workshop within the stylistic context of Art Deco. Standing 18 cm tall, it has a flared, truncated conical shape resting on a rounded base, whose compact volume accentuates the ornamental density. The vase's architecture is distinguished by a rigorously structured organization into registers. The body is punctuated by trapezoidal panels bordered with beaded friezes, framing a highly precious floral relief decoration. The flowers, rendered in translucent and opalescent enamels, feature petals modeled in shades of pale blue, mauve, and pink, enhanced with red and cobalt accents. These stylized and simplified floral motifs demonstrate a decorative sensibility where nature is translated into geometric rhythms and flat planes of color, in keeping with the decorative trends of the 1920s. The background, a luminous turquoise blue, is enriched with a subtle internal shimmer due to the use of silver foil, giving the surface a vibrant depth. The lower vertical bands, alternating between granulated silver textures and smooth enameled areas, create a contrasting interplay between matte and glossy finishes. This tactile and visual opposition is characteristic of Sarlandie's production during this period, when the technical mastery of cloisonné and enamel on metal reached remarkable refinement. The reverse reveals the carefully turned metal structure, exposing the brass beneath the rim, a discreet reminder of the original support. The hemispherical base, adorned with floral discs in shades of pink and blue against a turquoise background, extends the swirling decoration in a harmonious continuity, demonstrating a holistic conception of the object as a single volume, without hierarchy between the front and back. Through its formal balance, the richness of its translucent enamels, and the elegance of its stylized floral vocabulary, this vase fully embodies the Art Deco aesthetic while perpetuating the Limoges enameling tradition. It constitutes a particularly representative—and relatively rare in this compact format—example of Jules Sarlandie's expertise in the mid-1920s, a time when ornamentation became a synthesis of light and precious materials.
