Southern Germany, Upper Rhine Valley, 15th century
Carved pearwood casket of rectangular form, the panels finely worked in relief with animals set within fantastic, verdant landscapes against lozenge grounds. The lid is centred with a unicorn — a rare and notable motif in this category — while the front displays two birds and the reverse two dogs. The short sides bear Gothic-script monograms, the letter M ( for Maria). Complete with its original internal snap lock and rhomboid key.
Measures 17.5 × 10 × 7 cm.
Condition: defects and losses consistent with age.
