"Miniature - Sculpture - Shepherd's Cup - Knife-carved Wood - Openwork - Folk Art"
Mid-19th century, Europe (probably Central or Alpine). Rare carved wooden shepherd's cup with a cylindrical structure resting on an openwork foot formed by four vertical openings. The surface is entirely covered with a highly intricate geometric design: friezes of wolf's teeth, chevrons, inverted triangles, and lozenges follow one another in a tight, almost hypnotic rhythm. Each incision reveals long, patient, and repetitive work, executed with a knife. The decoration completely envelops the object, like a symbolic skin. The hollows, darkened by time, contrast with the warm hue of the wood, giving depth and vibrancy to the surface. The openwork foot lightens the mass and lends the whole an almost architectural presence. The object oscillates between a utilitarian vessel and a small totemic sculpture. The interior displays a beautiful patina from use. An old crack, consistent with the age of the wood, does not affect its solidity or stability. This type of pastoral cup is found in various regions of Europe, particularly in the Alps and Balkans, where knife carving and dense geometric decoration constitute a true folk art. Condition: beautiful old patina, wear and an old crack without structural weakness. Stable and homogeneous piece. Dimensions: Height: 9.5 cm. Shipping: ALL DELIVERIES ARE MADE VIA DHL EXPRESS ONLY.
