Jean Benner (1836-1906) - Portrait of a young woman with an earring. Jean Benner, born on March 28, 1836, in Mulhouse, was a French painter renowned for his portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes. From a family of artists, he was the twin brother of Emmanuel Benner, also a painter. Jean Benner studied painting in Paris and was inspired by masters such as Léon Bonnat and Ernest Hébert. He was also deeply inspired by the island of Capri, where he spent a large part of his life. Jean Benner had four children, all artists, and is buried in Père-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
