"Embroidered Kashmiri Wool Shawl From India - India For Export To France, Circa 1880"
Circa 1880, India. Kashmiri shawl embroidered on the borders of Tibet and called a Rumal Amli shawl in India, not to be confused with spoliated shawls, this one dates from the last quarter of the 19th century. It is square (Rumal) and in exceptional condition, produced by Kashmiri artisans solely for export to France. These dense, highly colorful shawls, creating a three-dimensional effect, were part of the French regional costume, worn in winter, particularly in Provence. The background is scarlet or Turkish red wool twill, entirely embroidered with eight-colored wool threads! Large central star-shaped reserve bearing the signature of the Indian artisan. The design is composed of long, curling palm fronds and languid boteh, foreshadowing the Art Nouveau style in France. Fringed edges on all four sides. No moth holes, no defects. Exceptional condition of color and preservation. Dimensions: 173 cm x 177 cm
