"Louis Dalpayrat (1838-1901) Portrait Of A Woman C. 1880 After Lebrun In Limoges. Bourdery, Ruben"
Extremely rare and sumptuous Limoges enamel on copper by Louis Dalpayrat, circa 1870/1880, depicting a portrait of a noblewoman after Lebrun, signed with the usual intertwined monogram LD + Lebrun. Diameter 8cm. This is indeed a very rare enamel on copper by Louis Dalpayrat, who here paints a portrait of a woman, perhaps a famous woman yet to be discovered, after Vigée Lebrun, circa 1870/1880. The quality of execution is simply remarkable: the finesse, the depth of the enamel, the choice of colors, the rendering of skin tones—everything is perfect, a true little masterpiece of Limoges enameling. This is logical, as Louis Dalpayrat, along with Louis Bourdery, René-Ernest Ruben, and Ernest Blancher, is one of the four greatest Limoges enamelers who revitalized the art of enameling in 19th-century Limoges. He was the brother of P. Adrien Dalpayrat, the celebrated Art Nouveau ceramist, who, like him, was born in Limoges in 1838 and would therefore be a painter and, above all, an enameler. He collaborated with several other 19th-century artists, including Jules Vieillard in Bordeaux, as evidenced by three enamels offered at Aguttes on June 20, 2024, depicting mythological scenes, which sold for €4,160! This enamel is in very good condition for its age of approximately 145 years; I note only a few minute scratches, that's all, no restoration. The work is guaranteed authentic.
